Frederick John Smith was born in Colchester, Essex and enlisted in the Royal Marines in October 1878, aged 18 years, and appears to have been discharged in July 1884 after service in H.M.S. Penelope - she carried a detachment of 37 Privates, R.M.; sold with a file of research.
