Alexander Davison’s Medal for The Nile 1798, silver, the frosted and mirror-polished medal set in contemporary silver glazed frame with silver rings for suspension, the rim inscribed ‘From Alexr. Davison Esqr. St James’s Square. A tribute of Regard to Richd. Jones, Esqr. 1st Lieut. of the Defence’, small bruise to rim, otherwise brilliant extremely fine and rare £3000-3500

Richard Jones was commissioned as Lieutenant in the Royal Navy on 14 February 1794, and was 1st Lieutenant of the Defence 74, commanded by Rear-Admiral John Peyton, at the battle of the Nile in 1798. The Defence had 4 men killed and 11 wounded, and Jones obtained the rank of Commander, 8 October 1798, for his conduct on that occasion. He afterwards commanded the Diligence sloop of war; the Chepstow district of Sea Fencibles; and the flag-ships of Vice-Admiral Thomas Wells, and Sir Manley Dixon. He obtained his post commission on 29 April 1802. Captain Richard Jones died on 11 December 1829.
