William Herbert Wood was presented with his L.S. & G.C. Medal at Tidworth by Major-General D. K. Bernard, C.B., C.M.G., D.S.O., on 10 July 1938. Subsequently embarked for service the B.E.F. with the 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade, he was taken P.O.W. following the famous defence of Calais in May 1940, his subsequent death in captivity being reported by No. 2 Records Office, Marienburg. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial; Wood appears in a photograph of members of ‘B’ Company, 1st Battalion, published in The Rifle Brigade Chronicle in 1934.
