Sub Lieutenant A. C. T. Bruce, R.N., aged 21 years, together with six others from H.M.S. Hercules, saved Francis Moran, an Engine Fitter working on the Hercules. At 6 p.m. on 24 June 1872, Moran fell into the River Mersey, the water 12 fathoms deep and with a tide running at about 4 knots. All the rescuers jumped overboard and helped to support the man until he was taken into a boat (Ref. R.H.S. Case No. 18,929). All seven rescuers were awarded the R.H.S. Medal in bronze.
