The 3rd City of Edinburgh Rifle Volunteer Corps was formed, as a corps of total abstainers, on 27 May 1867, by Captain John Hope. In 1880 the corps was renumbered the 2nd Edinburgh Rifle Volunteers, and in 1888 it became the 4th Volunteer Battalion Royal Scots. Lieutenant-Colonel William U. Martin, V.D., was commanding officer from June 1883 until December 1899.
