Charles George Edward Marmon was born in Garlinge, Kent. He served 14 years in the Royal Navy as a Seaman, Gunner and Diver. After leaving the service c.1911 he went to Australia. There he gained a master’s certificate for dredging on the Clarence River. With the onset of war he attested for service with the Australian Imperial Force on 23 July 1915. Initially posted to the 17th Battalion A.I.F., he was transferred to the 5th M.G.C. in March 1916 and on 23 March 1916 entered France. He was killed in action on 14 November 1916, aged 36 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. He was the son of Charlotte Going (formerly Marmon) of 185 Hatfield Road, St. Alban’s, Hertfordshire.
