James Simpson was born in Battersea, Middlesex. A Labourer by occupation he was attested for the 13th Regiment of Foot on 22nd January 1826 at London, aged 18 years. He served for 21 years and 114 days, and was discharged as 'Unfit for further service' at Dublin on 20th May 1847, aged 39 years and 4 months. He was present with the Army of the Indus in the Afghanistan Campaign, 1838-42; present at the Storming of Ghuznee, 23 July 1839, and the Forts of Tortan Durha (Tootumdurra, 30 September 1840) and Julgar (Joolgah) in the Kohistan, 3 October 1840; present at the several engagements in forcing the Passes from Cabul to Jellalabad in 1841, and in Defence of the latter fortress during 1841 and 1842; at Jugdullock (Jagdalak), 8 September, Tazeen, 13 September, and at the Capture of Cabul, 15 September 1842. His papers state that he ‘Distinguished Himself’ and had been awarded medals for the Storming of Ghuznee, Jellalabad and the recapture of Cabul. Private Simpson was admitted to an In Pension on 1 July 1875 and died on 7 November 1877. Sold with copied discharge papers and other research.
