Richard Riley was born in Birmingham. A Metal Roller by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment, he attested for service in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 23 October 1888, aged 18 years, 2 months. With the 1st Battalion he served in India, November 1890-November 1896, during which time he qualified for the I.G.S. Medals with clasps for Hazara 1891, Samana 1891 and the Relief of Chitral 1895. Transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1896, he was recalled to active service in November 1899. Posted to the 1st Battalion he seved in South Africa, December 1899-October 1901. Returning to England he was discharged as time expired on 22 October 1901. Sold with copied service papers.
