Memorial Plaque 1914-18 (Robert Hamilton Baillie) good very fine £120-160
Robert Hamilton Baillie enlisted at Longreach, Queensland. Serving as a Serjeant in the 9th Battalion Australian Imperial Forces, he was killed in action, at Gaba Tepe, Gallipoli, on 29 May 1915, aged 30 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli. A note with the lot states that Baillie rode with American President Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War, served in the Imperial Yeomanry during the Boer War, and served 5 years with the Canadian North West Mounted Police. One of his nephews was Brigadier Jock Hamilton-Baillie, M.C., who was a famous W.W.2 ‘escaper’.
