Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), Edward the Confessor, Expanding Cross type, Ælfric, Barnstaple, ELFRiC ON BERDE:, pellet in the fourth quarter of the reverse cross, 1.12 gms. Almost extremely fine, with a superb portrait, excessively rare, possibly the only known specimen of the type for the mint and one of only two coins of Barnstaple for the reign not in institutional collections (£800-1,200)

Ex Drabble (531), Lockett (part I, 812), and Brettell (423) collections. Barnstaple is an extremely rare mint for the reign of Edward the Confessor and known from only eight coins, six in institutional collections in this country or Scandinavia. (Cf BAR 185, p.402)
