William Glave was born in Warrington, Lancaster, and attested for the 11th Foot at Martinique, in the West Indies, on 29 May 1801, aged 11 years. He served as a Boy Drummer until May 1808, and thereafter as a Drummer, with occasional periods as a Private, until promotion to Corporal in January 1831. He was discharged in the rank of Corporal on 28 October 1835, in consequence of disability contracted in and by the service. His conduct was described as being that of a ‘very good and gallant soldier in the field and a trustworthy non commissioned officer,’ and that he served ‘five years in the West Indies; nineteen months at Madeira; five years on the Peninsula; five years at Gibraltar, and the remainder at Home. Was present at the battles of Busaco, Salamanca, Burgos, Pyrenees, Bayonne, Nivelle, Nive, Pampeluna, Orthes and Toulouse.’ He stated his intention to reside at Tiverton in Devonshire.
