Attributed to 2nd Lieutenant William Ellis, 7th Battalion, Liverpool Regiment, who was killed in action on 29 July 1918, aged 26 years. He was buried in the Bienvillers Military Cemetery. He was the son of Edward Ellis of Great Homer Street, Liverpool. Note: there are several officers with this surname and initial in the 1918 Army List.
