Edward Smith was born in Bermondsey, London. Serving in the 4th Battalion East Surrey Regiment Militia, he was released and attested for service in the Somerset Light Infantry on 1 Janaury 1883, aged 18 years, 5 months. With the regiment he served in India, 15 February 1886-2 November 1892, and was awarded the I.G.S. Medal with clasp for Burma 1885-87. In May 1890 he was tried by Court Martial for ‘offering violence to his superior officer’ - for which he was sentanced to 42 days imprisonment. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in November 1892 and discharged from the Army on 31 December 1896. Sold with copied service papers and roll extracts.
