Guard’s officer’s sword, 1854 pattern, for an officer of the Coldstream Guards, straight 82cm blade of levee weight by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, No 22368 for 1878 etched with crowned VR cypher foliate scrolls owners crest & motto regimental device and battle honours to ‘Sevastopol’ regulation plated guard incorporating regimental badge, fish-skin covered grip bound with copper wire, complete with its steel scabbard, minor wear overall £200-250
Brigadier-General Herbert Conyers Surtees DSO CMG, served in the Egyptian Campaigns 1884 & 1887, Boer War where he was awarded the DSO retiring in 1909 he re-joined during the Great War commanding the 52nd Infantry Brigade being promoted to Brigadier-Genereal and awarded the CMG.
The Wilkinson proof books record sword No 22368 as a ‘Dress, Coldstream Guards’ made for HC Surtees Esq dated 8th April 1878.
