John Rollo Noel Warburton was born on 14 December 1890 at Treherbert, Glamorgan. Qualifying as a M.R.C.S. Eng. and L.R.C.P. Lond. (St. Thomas’s) he entered the R.A.M.C. as Lieutenant in September 1914. Serving tin France during the war, 1915-19, he held the rank of Acting-Major during January 1918-September 1919. For his services he was awarded the Military Cross, twice mentioned in despatches and awarded the French Croix de Guerre. Postwar he served in Egypt, 1919-32, being seconded to the Egyptian Army, 1922-32. Promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1937, he served in India during 1937-40, being Officer Commanding the 7th Field Ambulance, 1936-39 and C.O. of the British Hospital at Naserabad, 1939-40. During the Second World War, as Colonel and Acting Brigadier, he served in Norway as A.D.M.S. H.Q. 7 Corps, May-June 1940; C.O. of 183 Field Ambulance, Jun-October 1940; in Gibraltar as C.O. 10 General Hospital, 1940-42; with the British North Africa and Central Mediterranean Force, 1942-44 he was A.D.M.S. H.Q.1 Algiers Area 1942-43 and A.D.M.S. H.Q. 52 Area, 1943-44. In the latter part of the war and the years immediately after, he was Deputy Director of Medical Services. For his wartime services he was three times mentioned in despatches. After holding the rank of Temporary Major-General, July 1947-January 1948, he was placed on Retirement Pay with the rank of Honorary Major-General on 27 April 1948. Major-General Warburton died in Cork on 31 July 1962.
