Henry James Fletcher was born in Atherton on 7 October 1860. Gaining the M.B. he was appointed Surgeon, afterwards Surgeon Captain on 30 May 1885. He served in the Miranzai Expeditionary Force in 1891 and was promoted to Major in the R.A.M.C. in May 1897. In the Boer War he served on operations in the Orange Free State, February-May 1900, including actions at Vet River, 5 & 6 May and Zand River. Operations in Transvaal, May-June 1900, including actions near Johannesburg, Pretoria and Diamond Hill. Operations in the Transvaal east and west of Pretoria, July-November 1900, including the action at Elands River, 4-16 August. Operations in the Orange River Colony, May-November 1900, including actions at Bethlehem, 6 & 7 July, and at Wittebergen. Further service in Transvaal and Cape Colony followed from November 1900 to the end of the war. Fletcher attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 30 May 1905.
