The National Rifle Association, Elcho Shield match, was first held in 1862 at Wimbledon, and was competed for by England and Scotland. The teams of eight were limited to members of the Volunteer Regiments. The competition consisted of each member firing fifteen shots, from a rifle of his choice, at a target, 800, 900 and 1,000 yards distant. The competition was named after the chairman of the National Rifle Association, Lord Elcho, who presented the first prize in 1862 - the competition being won by England. An Irish team entered the competition for the first time in 1865. Between 1862 and 1872 the Elcho Shield Match was won eight times by England and three times by Scotland; Ireland won for the first time in 1873. The medal is possibly the work of Elkington’s, and being without Irish emblems would indicate a date before 1865.
