Frank Courtney was born at Chelmsford, Essex, in 1843, and served with No. 9 Company, Taranaki Military Settlers. He was previously a Constable with the Armed Constabulary and saw active service at Kaitake, Te Ahuahu, Pukearuhe and Moturoa.
