A letter from the Ministry of Defence in answer to an enquiry as to the details behind the award of this medal reads: 'With reference to your letter dated 5th March 1965, it is regretted that a full citation concerning the award of the British Empire Medal to Corporal W.R. Johnson, B.E.M., is unavailable. I can tell you, however, that it was granted for meritorious service in Basrah, May 1958-59.'
