Muir was a pre-war regular who had been advanced to Flying Officer in the Administrative and Special Duties Branch in September 1939. Afterwards a member of the Technical Branch (Signals), he was promoted to Flight Lieutenant in March 1942 and to Squadron Leader in July 1945. He was released in the following year.
