Hugh Sheardown Staveley was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, matriculating in 1907 and was later employed as an articled clerk with George L. Shackles of Hull. He joined the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment as a Private in October 1914 and was subsequently granted a commission in the same battalion. Serving with his unit during the battle of Oppy Wood, he was killed in action on 3 May 1917, aged 30 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. His Colonel said of him, ‘He was commanding his company at the time and they did splendidly.’ During the battle of Oppy Wood, 3/4 May 1917, the attacking strength of the 11th Battalion was 15 officers and 454 other ranks. The losses were 11 officers and 240 other ranks. Sold with copied research details.
