William H. Edwards was commissioned as Artificer Engineer on 1 November 1900. After service aboard Doris in South Africa from October 1899 to March 1901, he served mainly aboard torpedo boat destroyers and gun-boats. He was promoted to Chief Artificer Engineer in 1904 and, in April 1915, was appointed Engineer Lieutenant at Wei-hai-wei Dockyard, where he remained until April 1920.
