James Freeman, who was born at Maidstone, Kent, originally enlisted in the 11th Light Dragoons as a boy soldier in September 1826. He subsequently served over 20 years as an “India hand”, transferring to the 9th Lancers in April 1842, with whom he was present at the battle of Punniar in the Gwalior Campaign, Sobraon in the First Sikh War, and at the crossing of the Chenab and the battles of Chilianwala and Goojerat in the Punjab 1848-49. He was finally discharged as a result of chronic rheumatism in October 1854.
