William Arthur Irvine Buchanan qualified at the Royal Veterinary College of Ireland, Dublin, where he was a Staff Sergeant in the O.T.C. He volunteered his services at the outbreak of war and was Gazetted Lieutenant on 31 August 1914. He served in France from October 5th following and was present at the First Battle of Ypres, Neuve Chapelle and subsequent engagements with the 7th Division. He took command, in November 1915, of the 50th Mobile Veterinary Section of the 39th Division and served again in France from 8 March 1916. He was killed in action on 24 July 1917, between Poperinghe and Elverdinghe.
