William Ingham Macauley was one of the first officers of the Army Veterinary Corps to be mentioned, in Sir John French's despatch from the Aisne in October 1914. At this time he was attached to the Queen's Bays and, after one engagement, was personally thanked by the General in command for saving a comrade under fire. He died of wounds on 14 May 1917 and is buried in the Bapaume Australian Cemetery, near Albert.
