Overview

The New Zealand Medal 1845-66 was authorised and issued in 1869 to all surviving veterans of both the First New Zealand War 1845–47, and the Second New Zealand War 1860–66. The medal was awarded without any clasps, and instead the reverse of the medal bears the dates of the individual recipient’s period of service. As a result many different reverse types exist. Naval personnel qualified for the medal if they formed part of the Naval Brigade on shore and took part in the operations against the enemy.
