Overview

The Army of India Medal 1799–1826 was authorised and issued in 1851 to surviving veterans as a retrospective award for the various actions in India during the early 19th Century. The medal was always awarded with one or more clasps, and a total of 21 different clasps were authorised, the earliest clasp being for the assault on the fortress of Allighur during the Second Mahratta War (4 September 1803), and the last clasp being for the siege of Bhurtpoor (18 January 1826). The greatest number of clasps awarded to a single recipient was 7.
