DEVON, Devonport, Devonport Mechanics Institute, a silver award medal, unsigned [obv. after J. Dassier], bust of Isaac Newton three-quarters right, rev. arms of the Institute, named (Thomas Allom, for Drawings & Plans of a Workhouse), 43mm, 55.68g (MI II, 470/85 for obv.; cf. D & W 221/149; cf. DNW 66, 1125). Some rim and surface marks, otherwise very fine, grey tone, very rare in silver £150-200

Thomas Allom (1804-72) architect, artist and topographical illustrator, b. Lambeth, lived in Barnes. He was a founding member of what was to become the Royal Institute of British Architects and worked with Sir Charles Barry on the Houses of Parliament. He produced a series ‘Devonshire Illustrated’ that was printed in London between 1828 and 1832 and is remembered for his drawings of Constantinople and the Scenery of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor, published in 1838, and China Illustrated, published in 1845
