Joseph Haywood was born in Gloucester and enlisted into the 23rd Light Dragoons in 1805. He served in the Peninsula and was entitled to the Military General Service Medal with clasp for Talavera. He was admitted to an out-pension at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, on 26 February 1818, suffering from ‘ulcerated legs and wounded hip at Waterloo’.
