John Birdsell enlisted in March 1813, aged 17, a gardener by trade from Tadcaster, Yorkshire. He served in the Peninsula and was discharged due to a disease of the lungs rendering him unfit for Regimental duty, being described as ‘efficient and a trustworthy soldier’.
