Thomas Sheppard was born in the Parish of Pontefract, near Knottingly, Yorkshire, and attested for the 6th Foot at Leeds on 3 April 1834, aged 18, a corn miller by trade. He served abroad 15 years 7 months, at the Cape of Good Hope 8 years 2 months, and in East Indies 7 years 5 months, and ‘Served in the Kaffir War of 1846 & 7 and 1850, 51, 52 & 53.’ He was discharged at Keiskama Hoek on 25 January 1855, in consequence of ‘disability’, his conduct being described as ‘indifferent’ having been tried and imprisoned on several occasions. Sold with a 6th Foot pewter tunic button salvaged from the wreck of the Birkenhead and copied discharge papers.
