M.M. London Gazette 29 August 1918

John Leonard Barlow was born on 8 August 1898 at Lincoln, the son of John and Sarah Barlow. He attested for the 4th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment on 14 August 1915 giving his age incorrectly as 19 Years and 6 days. He disembarked in France with the 1/4th Battalion on 2 January 1916 and served in France until 2 October 1916 when he was admitted to No. 3 Canadian General Hospital suffering from inflammation of connective tissue and was repatriated to England, spending ten months in the reserves. Upon his recuperation he returned to the front on 14 October 1917 with the 2/5th Battalion and was then five days later posted to the 8th (Service) Battalion. He was awarded the Military Medal by the Commander in Chief on 13 May 1918. The edition of the London Gazette carrying his award announcement together with the date of the actual award strongly suggest that this was an award for the Battle of the Ancre, where on 5 April 1918, the 8th Lincolns together with the 4th Middlesex and 8th Somerset carried out a successful attack on a series of enemy trenches in Rossignol Wood.
