Approximately 603 medals, of which 288 were without clasp, awarded to the 1st Class Cruiser H.M.S. Endymion. The latest published transcript of the medal roll notes that a duplicate medal was issued.

W. Ashwell was born in Aston, Warwickshire, in 1882 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in 1898. He was advanced Ordinary Seaman in 1900, and Able Seaman in 1903. He served during the Great War in H.M.S. Wolverine, and survived her sinking on 12 December 1917 after she collided with H.M.S. Rosemary off north-west Ireland. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1922.
