James Waddell served during the Second World War as a Wireless Operator / Air Gunner with 49 Squadron, flying Hampdens, and was killed in action when Hampden AT156, piloted by Pilot Officer D. C. Kay, was shot down by the German night-fighter ace Major Wilhelm Hegert and crashed near Roly, 7km south-south-west of Philippville, Belgium, whilst taking part in a raid on Cologne, on 5-6 April 1942. Of the crew of four Pilot Officer Kay was taken Prisoner-of-War; Sergeant Ainger evaded capture; and Sergeants Brown and Waddell were killed.

Waddell is buried alongside Brown in Charleroi Cemetery. His medals were sent to his mother Margaret, Mrs. James Waddell.
