The Persia and Central India campaign pair awarded to Troop Sergeant-Major Samuel Whitaker, 14th Light Dragoons, who was slightly wounded by a sabre cut at Mundesore in November 1857 and severely wounded by a gun shot at Koonch in May 1858

Samuel Whitaker was born at Marylebone, London, and attested for the 14th Light Dragoons at Westminster on 31 July 1848, aged 19 years 8 months, a labourer by trade. He was promoted to Corporal on 10 March 1854; Sergeant, 1 February 1856; Troop Sergeant-Major, 23 May 1858; and was discharged on 27 August 1860, being unfit for further service. He served in the Persian Expedition in 1857; served with the Central India Field Force in 1857-58 under the command of Major-General Sir Hugh Rose, K.C.B., was present at the capture of Dhar 31 October, action at Mundesore, 21, 22, 23, 24 November 1857; siege and capture of Chandauree 17 March, battle of Betwa 10 April, siege and capture of Jhansi 5 April, action of Koonch 7 May 1858, capture of Calpee and Morar 16 June, and recapture of Gwalior 19 June 1858. He received a very slight sabre cut on finger on the 23rd November 1857 in an engagement with the rebels near Mundesore, and was severely wounded at the affair at Koonch, 7 May 1858, by a gun shot wound over right acronium and spine.
