Provenance: Whalley Collection 1875; Sotheby, March 1988.

Charles Shepherd was born in the Parish of Garstring, Lancaster, and enlisted into the 29th Foot at Preston on 15 July 1803, aged 19, for unlimited service. He was discharged on 23 October 1821, in consequence ‘of being worn out from length of service. This man was wounded in the right thigh on the 16th of May 1811, at the battle of Albuhera in Spain.’

Sold with copied discharge papers,
