Of Royal Interest: A collection of Memorabilia relating to Corporal Ernest G Moffatt, a wine waiter at Sandringham, comprising a Royal Field Artillery gold locket ring, photographs and letters etc; including a photograph of young Ernest in uniform, a typed letter from Sandringham, dated Christmas 1917, relating to a ‘small Christmas present’ for ‘Corporal Ernest G Moffatt, from Queen Alexandra, Princess Victoria and ... Members of the Her Majesty’s household..., with original envelope addressed to Ernest in Le Havre, France; a personal invitation to Ernest to attend ‘A Dinner to the Returned Soldiers and Sailors of the Sandringham Estate and the Parish of Dersingham’ held on 25th October 1919 at Sandringham Hall Stables; further letters and Royal invitations; assorted group photographs of the staff from Sandringham; photographs of George V’s funeral (January 1936) showing Edward VIII, the Duke of York (later George VI), the Duke of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent, the Earl of Harewood, etc.; assorted menus from Buckingham Palace, dated ‘13 Mai 1937’; further photographs showing Elizabeth the Queen Mother, with her grandchildren, Prince Charles and Princess Anne, etc. £100-£120

Ernest G Moffatt and his wife Letitia (neé Hickman), were employed by the Royal Household, first at Queen Alexandra’s Marlborough House, Ernest as a wine waiter and Letitia as a housemaid, and later at Sandringham.
During the First World war, Ernest served with the Royal Garrison Artillery on the Western Front from 1 March 1915, before subsequently transferring to the Labour Corps. His Regimental number was 46301.
Their eldest son John, was born in Badby, Northampton in 1922. Later the family moved to Mortlake, London, where John went on to become a highly successful stage actor.
