The Army L.S. & G.C. awarded to Colour-Sergeant Charles Spinks, 57th Foot, later a Yeoman of the Guard

Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (735. Cr. Sergt. C. Spinks, 57th Foot) nearly very fine £120-£140

Charles Spinks served in the 57th Foot for 21 years from 6 December 1860, and was in New Zealand from 1860 to early 1867. He was on duty at Albert Street police station, Manchester, in September 1867, having been sent with the Regiment from Salford Barracks. There he helped to capture and hold in custody Fenians suspected of the murder of Police Sergeant Brett. With men of the 72nd, the 57th manned the walls of the New Bailey Prison during the execution of the three ‘Manchester Martyrs’ convicted of the murder. Later the Regiment was in Ceylon from 1873-79, and in South Africa from February to October, 1879. He was appointed to Her Majesty’s Body Guard on 2 July 1891, and died on 8 April 1901. He was also entitled to campaign medals for New Zealand and South Africa, and the 1897 Jubilee Medal.
