A fine Second Afghan War and Burma campaign group of six awarded to Sergeant-Major J. Wogan, Hampshire Regiment, who was awarded the M.S.M. as Yeoman of the King’s Body Guard

Afghanistan 1878-80, 2 clasps, Charasia, Kabul (1237. Colr. Serg: J. Wogan. 67 Foot.); India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Burma 1885-7 (Sergt. Major J. Wogan 2d Bn. Hamps. R.) regimental number lost through edge bruising; Coronation 1902, bronze; Coronation 1911; Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (1237. Cr. Sergt. J. Wogan. Hamps: R.); Meritorious Service Medal, G.V.R., 1st issue (S. Mjr: J. Wogan. Hamps: R.) the first two with edge bruising and contact marks, otherwise nearly very fine, the remainder good very fine or better (6) £1,000-£1,200

James Wogan was born in Athlone, Co. Roscommon, Ireland. A book binder by occupation, he attested for the 67th Regiment at Westminster on 21 August 1866, aged 18 years for a bounty of £1. He served overseas with the 67th Regiment in Burma, October 1872-April 1875, and in the East Indies, December 1878-February 1888, during which period he was present in the campaigns in Afghanistan 1878-80 (Medal with two clasps) and Burma 1885-87 (Medal with clasp). Wogan attained the rank of Sergeant-Major in August 1887, and was released, having claimed retirement, on 12 July 1893. He was appointed to the Queen’s Body Guard on 9 March 1898, and was awarded the M.S.M. without annuity as Yeoman of the King’s Body Guard by Army Order 132 of 1919. He died at Norwood, Middlesex, on 25 January 1922, aged 70.
