John Fitzgerald enlisted in 1909 into the 4th Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps. His unit was stationed in India at the outbreak of the Great War and returned to England on 18 November 1914. Fitzgerald arrived with his battalion in France on 20 December 1914. On 8 September 1915 he was transferred from a sick convoy to a stationary hospital suffering from the effects of an old wound. He was appointed Acting Sergeant on 8 May 1917 and then to Sergeant. He saw further service with the K.R.R.C. in the 3rd Battalion, the 21st (Yeoman Rifles) Battalion, and the 18th (Arts & Crafts) Battalion.
