George Kenneth Gowers was born in Chelmsford on 30 December 1910, the son of Jesse Gowers, who became Mayor of the town in 1917. He attended Brentwood School and joined the Territorial Army serving as Second Lieutenant in the 54th East Anglian Divisional Train, Royal Army Service Corps from 9 September 1929. On 3 February 1934 he was commissioned Second Lieutenant, unattached list, Indian Army and was posted to the 1/4th Bombay Grenadiers on 21 March 1935. He was advanced Lieutenant in 1936, was appointed Adjutant in 1937, and was promoted Captain in 1942. He served in the Loe Agra and Mohmand Operations in 1935 and on the North West Frontier and in Burma with 5/4th Bombay Grenadiers during the Second World War. He was then posted, in late 1945, with the 5th Jats to Java, South East Asia, where he was wounded in the operations to counter the bloody uprising by rebels seeking independence. In 1947, now holding the rank of Major, he was transferred to the Royal Artillery. Advanced to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1955, he served through to 1958 at which time he was placed on the retired list.
