Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 1 clasp, Cape Colony (W. H. Hurley, A.B. H.M.S. Doris) top lugs removed, good very fine £120-£160

William Henry Hurley was born in Clevedon in April 1871, and joined the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class in June 1886. He advanced to Able Seaman in September 1890, and subsequent service included in H.M.S. Doris, November 1897 - May 1901.

Hurley was discharged after the Second Boer War, but re-engaged for service with the Army during the Great War. He served during the Great War with the Devon Regiment in the Egyptian theatre of war from 27 September 1915, and subsequently served in the Labour Corps. Hurley was invalided home in 1918, and hospitalised for 9 months. Having recuperated, Hurley set up and ran a second hand clothes shop in Clevedon (a copied picture of which, with his family standing outside, is included in the lot).

Hurley died in January 1937.
