Frederick Carmen was born in London in 1880 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at the Pall Mall Depot, London, on 14 February 1901, whilst currently serving with the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. He served with the 37th (Buckinghamshire) Company, 10th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 16 March to 31 October 1901, and was discharged at Gosport, Hampshire, on 1 November 1901, after 261 days’ service.
