Ernest Cuthbert Jennings was born in Ipswich, Suffolk, in 1871. An architect by profession, he attested for the Imperial Yeomanry in London on 5 February 1901, whilst currently serving in the 1st Suffolk and Harwich Volunteer Artillery. He served with the 34th (Middlesex) Company, 11th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 8 March 1901 to 2 March 1902, and was discharged at Shorncliffe on 28 April 1902, after 1 year and 83 days’ service.
