The proposal by Applegath and Cowper in 1818 found favour with the committee which advanced £1,200 to fund further development. The basis of their design was that the back of the note would be a perfect mirror image of the front. The association was terminated in 1821 after the engravers at the bank were able to successfully copy their latest design. Notes are all payable to Henry Hase, chief cashier, and carry a printed signature of Thomas Rippon, his assistant, who became chief cashier in 1829
