Goldmann (Charles Sydney) With General French and The Cavalry in South Africa, 1st Ed., xix+477pp., portrait frontis., approx. 114 photos. (inc. fldg. panoramas), approx. 43 fldg. maps, 8 sketches in end-pocket. Macmillan. 1902.
Standard study. Contemporary deluxe crushed red morocco with blue crushed morocco panels inset front & rear with mongogram JDPF, a bespoke binding devised for French by the author and executed by the Guild of Women Binders. Endpapers have hand coloured badges of the British cavalry regiments & the front one bears a lengthy presentation inscription from the author: “To General Sir John French with the compliments of the author & with his hopes that the contents may be considered to have measured with fairness & justice the extent & value of the Cavalry occupying that part of the campaign herein dealt with…”
front hinge cracked, spine damaged & amateurishly repaired with paste, ffep & ht loose, otherwise generally sound £100-150
