A collection of Sir John French’s correspondence received from many leading military, political and society figures of the day, reflecting the wide range of connections of a senior figure in public life. We note letters from Lord Roberts VC; Viscount Allenby and Lady Allenby; The Earl of Warwick; The Bishop of London; Lord Haldane; Viscount Plumer; Col. Sir Clive Wigram; Lord Garvagh; Gen. Sir William Pulteney; Elizabeth Cheylesmore; Maj.-Gen. J.S.M. Shea; Gen. Sir Neville Macready; Lady Hamilton; Lord Knollys; The Lord Mayor of London and many others (around 50 items, c.1910-1925). Together with: Correspondence re Touring Club de Belgique scheme for erecting demarcation stones in the battlefield areas; sundry papers documents and papers including letter from the Lord Chamberlain enquiring whether it is Lord French’s intention of accepting an Honorary Freedom of the City of London; another granting an Entrée at Court, 6th July 1914; typed copies of congratulatory messages sent by Lord French to Admiral Sir Lewis Bayly, Foch, Haig & Beatty on the announcement of the armistice, very good, most folded £300-400
