The origin of Vauxhall Gardens was the New Spring Garden, opened c. 1661. In 1728 it was acquired by Jonathan Tyers, who relaunched the Gardens in 1732 with admission priced at a shilling. Season tickets, of which the following are examples, are thought to date closer to 1740 and their prices ranged from one guinea to two guineas. In 1821 the Gardens were sold and re-opened as ‘Royal’ gardens in 1822; they were finally closed in 1859
