British South Africa Company Medal 1890-97, reverse undated, 2 clasps, Mashonaland 1890, Matabeleland 1893 (Tpr. C. G. Macpherson, B.S.A.C.P.) a few light scuffs, otherwise nearly extremely fine £2000-2600

Only 11 medals issued with these two clasps. Just 30 Matabeleland 1893 clasps were issued in total.

No. 459 Trooper Charles Glenelg Macpherson was born in Singapore in December 1860, son of Ronald Macpherson, an officer in the Madras Artillery and Resident Councillor of Singapore. He was ‘A good fellow’ according to No. 527 Trooper R. C. Smith (see following Lot), who attested on 10 April 1890, having travelled from Kimberley to Mafeking by wagon with No. 458 Trooper S. Kemp, who describes him as a remittance man. He served in “D” Troop in the Pioneer Column of 1890, was promoted to Corporal in that troop on 1 January 1891, and discharged from the same troop on 15 October 1891. He served as Troop Sergeant Major in the Victoria Rangers in the Matabele War of 1893 (Men Who Made Rhodesia refers). He died at Durban on 4 November 1937, aged 76 years 11 months.

Sold with an original Department of Defence letter, dated 24 March 1930, inviting Macpherson to apply for the 1890 Medal, and various copied official correspondence regarding its subsequent issue to him.
