Walter John Vizard was commissioned Ensign in the 35th Madras Native Infantry in 1846. He served with the Regiment in Pegu during the Second Burmese War (entitled to I.G.S. 1854-95, with ‘Pegu’ clasp). During the Indian Mutiny he commanded a detachment at Diggi, North Canara, throughout the operations March - December 1858, and was present in a skirmish with and in the pursuit of rebels.

Vizard advanced to Colonel, Madras Staff Corps, in 1877. He retired Major-General, and died at Dursley, Gloucestershire, in December 1898.
